countywide survey of assets & behaviors

The Search Institute’s “Assets and Behaviors” survey was utilized to measure the developmental assets, deficits, risk-taking behaviors and thriving indicators of the general education adolescent population in Midland County public schools. Approximately 85% of 6th-12th graders in the county’s public schools participated in the study. The results demonstrated slightly better outcomes compared with the national averages but still well short of desired ranges. One of the most telling results is that the more assets youths exhibit, the fewer the number of risk-taking behaviors and the higher the number of thriving indicators for the cohort. Additionally, a disturbing finding is that the number of assets tends to decline with increasing grade level suggesting peer influences are eroding asset quality. This study was completed with the collaboration of the several county school districts and the Probate Court. It was funded by a grant from the Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation.
