jump into kindergarten - midland countyIn partnership with Midland County public schools, the Educational Services Agency and Albion College, TLC is sponsoring a three-week project aimed at augmenting a child’s pre-school skills. The Jump Into Kindergarten curriculum, developed by Dr. Thomas Johnson of Albion College, seeks to better prepare five-year-old children for kindergarten through a physically based “learning through play” experience. The project targets 150 five year-olds each summer who are enrolled in kindergarten in the fall. The project is funded for three years with years one and three for those enrolled in Midland Public Schools and year two for those enrolled in Bullock Creek, Coleman and the Meridian Public Schools. A pre- and post-assessment of the child’s cognitive and behavioral skills is conducted and a four-year longitudinal study is planned for participants relative to a control group. Jump is funded by grants from the Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow, Rollin M. Gerstacker, Charles J. Strosacker, and the Midland Area Community Foundations.
