preschool tool totesTLC is collaborating with the Midland County Women, Infants and Children (WIC) clinic to provide a canvas tote bag filled with various pre-school supplies, such as storybooks, crayons, glue, construction paper, coloring books, and the like, to economically disadvantaged three to five year-olds in the county. In addition to the supplies, a parent’s guide outlining simple and practical ways to teach children is included in the tote. All participating children are evaluated at the onset of their participation in the project and at each six-month interval as they return to WIC. In addition, each child receives a “refresher” bag with additional supplies that would have been consumed at each six-month interval through age five. The child’s gains in certain cognitive and behavioral abilities will be reported to determine whether and to what extent the project improves these skills. The Preschool Tool Tote project is funded by donations from individuals, civic and labor organizations, businesses, and by the Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation.
