success through art

Based on the low participation rate in “Creative Activities” as determined in the Juvenile Court Wards Assets and Behaviors study, a project was begun to provide an art experience to adolescents in the day treatment program of the Midland County Juvenile Care Center (JCC). The project, funded by a generous grant from the Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation, involves sculpting a three-dimensional form depicting the American legal system, then casting it in bronze to create a backdrop behind the Juvenile Court judge’s bench. Participants were evaluated at the onset of the project regarding their character and values and a post-assessment is completed as they leave the JCC. Midland Public Schools art teachers Carol Lewin and Mark Francisco are leading the participating youth through the project. It is scheduled for completion in mid-2007.
