vision therapy

In collaboration with Dr. Steven Kocks of the Anderson Eye Associates, the Midland Lions Club and Midland Public Schools, TLC investigated the application of Vision Therapy to improve the reading skills of certain children with eye muscle control and coordination issues. The study involved vision screening of all participating first graders (N=104) at Eastlawn and Woodcrest Schools. The Lions Club provided complimentary glasses to those low-income students who required them. Fourteen students (13.5%) were identified as candidates to participate in the study. Vision Therapy was extended to these students over the course of a semester. Significant gains in the reading scores of each participant were observed through pre- and post-therapy assessments using the Michigan Literacy Progress Profile (MLPP) instrument. The project’s limitations were the lack of a corresponding control group to determine the source of the reading improvements and the high variability of personal, at-home, participation in the therapy exercises.
